[15] And Saul said: ‘They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto HaShem thy G-d; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.’ [16] Then Samuel said unto Saul: ‘Stay, and I will tell thee what HaShem hath said to me this night.’ And he said unto him: ‘Say on.’ [17] And Samuel said: ‘Though thou be little in thine own sight, art thou not head of the tribes of Israel? And HaShem anointed thee king over Israel; [18] and HaShem sent thee on a journey, and said: Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed. [19] Wherefore then didst thou not hearken to the voice of HaShem, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst that which was evil in the sight of HaShem?’ [20] And Saul said unto Samuel: ‘Yea, I have hearkened to the voice of HaShem, and have gone the way which HaShem sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. [21] But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice unto HaShem thy G-d in Gilgal.’ [22] And Samuel said: ‘Hath HaShem as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in hearkening to the voice of HaShem? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. [23] For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because thou hast rejected the word of HaShem, He hath also rejected thee from being king.’ [24] And Saul said unto Samuel: ‘I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of HaShem, and thy words; because I feared the people, and hearkened to their voice. [25] Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship HaShem.’ [26] And Samuel said unto Saul: ‘I will not return with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of HaShem, and HaShem hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.’ [27] And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his robe, and it rent. [28] And Samuel said unto him: ‘The HaShem hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. [29] And also the Glory of Israel will not lie nor repent; for He is not a man, that He should repent.’ [30] Then he said: ‘I have sinned; yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship HaShem thy G-d.’ [31] So Samuel returned after Saul; and Saul worshipped HaShem. [32] Then said Samuel: ‘Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.’ And Agag came unto him in chains. And Agag said: ‘Surely the bitterness of death is at hand.’ [33] And Samuel said: As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before HaShem in Gilgal. [34] Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeath-shaul.
(I Samuel 15:15-34 [JPS])
[1] And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their stages, according to the commandment of HaShem, and encamped in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink. [2] Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said: ‘Give us water that we may drink.’ And Moses said unto them: ‘Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye try HaShem?’ [3] And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said: ‘Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?’ [4] And Moses cried unto HaShem, saying: ‘What shall I do unto this people? they are almost ready to stone me.’ [5] And HaShem said unto Moses: ‘Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thy hand, and go. [6] Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.’ And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. [7] And the name of the place was called Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tried HaShem, saying: ‘Is HaShem among us, or not?’ [8] Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
